Capturing Rainbows on the Big Island of Hawaii

Waikoloa rainbow

Dramatic double rainbow as seen from Queen Kaahumanu Hwy, just past the Waikoloa Village intersection

About 5:30 pm last Saturday, as I was driving north along the Kohala Coast (on Queen Kaahumanu Highway, just past the Waikoloa Village intersection) toward our office at the Shops at Mauna Lani, I stopped to take the photo above. The scene was quite a dramatic one, with the stunning rainbow against a backdrop of gathering dark clouds and rugged lava rock.

When I pulled over onto the shoulder, it was misting slightly. I stopped, then there was another car on the shoulder and then another. Soon there were cars pulled over on both sides of the highway, like we were gathering to watch a West Hawaii sunset. Everyone was out with their cameras. (One couple was taking photos with the wife in the foreground and we laughed about how that would look good on their Christmas card this year.) At first, there was just one rainbow, but after a few minutes the second was visible.

Such a beautiful moment, and wonderful to share it with other Big Islanders and Big Island visitors!
