The highly anticipated Christmas at the Fairmont–Dining with the Chefs is scheduled this year for Saturday, December 8, from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm at the Fairmont Orchid Hotel. This annual culinary arts extravaganza is sponsored by the American Culinary Federation Kona-Kohala Chefs as a fundraiser for local culinary scholarships and to assist in the effort to raise $1 million dollars to purchase the kitchen equipment required for the food service program for the future Hawaii Community College Palamanui campus, scheduled to open in 2014.
In 1989, my wife, Jean Hull, who was then a Professor of Culinary Arts, proposed this event as a benefit for culinary students who did not have funds to continue for the second year. Since that time over $240,000 has been awarded for culinary scholarships and equipment from this gala benefit.
This year the lighting of the Fairmont Orchid’s spectacular Christmas coconut Christmas tree will provide an impressive beginning for the gala event. The chefs from 20 of the top Kona-Kohala resorts and restaurants and food related businesses will prepare a sumptuous bounty of spectacular culinary offerings using primarily local products and accompanied by fine wines, handcrafted ales and Kona coffee. The opportunity to interact with many of the talented chefs and food professionals is a highlight for many of those who attend.
Jazz played by the Kohala Quartet also adds to the atmosphere. Many enjoy being able to participate in the live or silent auction which offers local products, dining opportunities and local activities as well premiere or luxury hotel and travel packages.
Tickets for the event are priced at $85 and can be ordered online at: konakohalachefs.org or purchased at Kailua Candy Company, Clark Realty Corporation’s Kona office, Kona Wine Market, Café Pesto Hilo and, of course, at the Fairmont Orchid.
Join us for this festive welcome to the holiday season, made especially rewarding because of the good cause the event supports.
